It that time of the year again when the nominees for the ever-controversial Zim Hip-Hop Awards are revealed. Without further ado let's jump right into it..
NB: All spelling errors identified were corrected
Best Video
Hey Wena - Thabbz ft Cal_Vin
Handivhundutswe - Nastro
Harare Hairarwe - Myke Pimp
Mare - gT Beats
Tambisa - Tricky J
The quality of videos has been turned up a notch, with more emphasis on scenary and angles as opposed to green screens. This one is a no-brainer. The most-talked about Zim Hip-Hop video of the year, none other than Mare. Tambisa comes in a close second here. So either way Mr. Elders is winning lol.
Best Female Rapper
Icy Murda
Miss Kiddy
Blacperl
Amard
Only one concern here, what did Amard do this year? From the nominees list it looks like Blacperl is going to take this one.
Best Album
T1 Wema1 - Inzwa
Guluva Seven – Colour of Dreams
Briss Mbada – Briss Mbada Ndeuyo
Cal_Vin – Year of The Vin
Mudiwa – Mwana waMambo
Lol I may seem biased here, since I'm the Creative Director for Inzwa but I think best album entails the overall concept, feature artist and producer contributions, as well as packaging. I'm putting my money on Inzwa.
Best Collaboration
Peekay ft Busy Signal - Show me love
Blacperl ft Stunner,Noble Stylez – They do thega remix
Ti Gonzi ft Baller Mandizha - Zvenyu
Kidd Aktive ft Cal_Vin and Gze - Mhamha Honai (REMIX)
Bry360 – Konzereza Remix ft Mudiwa and Cal_Vin
Guys, Show Me Love is too old to be here. Best Collaboration would have to be battled between Mhamha Honai (REMIX) and Zvenyu. The former features two undeniably relevant Zim Hip-Hop artists and the latter has managed to gain a lot of appeal outside Zim Hip-Hop circles.
Best Group
K.L.A.P
Art Department
Ishy X and Foster
Team Bho
Red Monkey Nation
Best Group? Team Bho. Why? Love them or hate them they've managed to create their own brand that stands out in everything they do. I doubt there's a group that stays on people's Zim Hip-Hop chats like this one. They have mastered the art of always being the centre of attention, refusing to stand in the shadows. Their grind is on a whole different level. Art Department had a good run but it seemed to just fizzle out after the release of their album, which may piut them at a disadvantage here.
Best Male Rapper
Briss Mbada
Cal_Vin
Bry Three Sixty
T-Gonzi
8L
I don't know what criteria they will use to decide but my money money is on Cal_Vin, for putting Kingsville on the map this year and putting in a lot of work. There's also that Cassper thing...
Best New Comer
Myke Pimp
Thabbz
Guluva 7
Mile
T1 WeMa1
Of all the artists nominated here Mile is the most versatile one, being able to both rap and sing. His lack of vernac use doesn't dampen the fact that he stands an actual chance to take this one home.
Best Producer
Anonzi Xndr
Cal_Vin
Kronik
P2daoh
If this category is judged by the amount of work one put in during the year Anonzi Xndr will win this one. We've seen him release 3 full projects from his Rehab imprint this year, not to mention numerous singles.
Best Diaspora
Kapital K
Metaphysics
Rhyme Assassin
gTBeats
Gigi LaMayne
I'm sure that Ice Cream (REMIX) with Khuli Chana played a part in putting Gigi on this list. Don't forget the boy Kapital K did it big in Miami this year so I'm sure Kap will take this one.
Song Of the year
Trey Yung - Ndikoko
T-gonzi - Zvenyu
Cal_vin - Zikhupani
Maskiri – Africa
Blacperl - They do thega(remix)
Another no-brainer here. If TGonz doesn't take this one home I don't know. Hold up, why is John Bhuru missing here? Sure Maskiri did a track with Keisha White but it wasn't received as widely. I don't even know what Ndikoko is doing here, this should've been on the 2014 edition nominations. Z'khupani may also take this one home, this Cassper Nyovest feature did have some buzz.
Best Club DJ
DJ Carter
Cranki Trixx
T Fresh
T.K beats
Lindsay the Dude
Ummmmm pass....
Best Radio DJ
Emmitty Smooth
Mc Chita
DJ Mox
DJ Squila
Butterphly
Hmmmm I'm torn between DJ Mox and Butterphly here. I would be happy if either took the award home.
Best Journalist (tv)
Prometheus
Errr I don't get what this category is all about but I'm sure Prometheus is here because of Zim Hip-Hop Report. I guess he wins already since he has no competition here.
Best Journalist (print)
Naboth Rizla
Prometheus
Sindiso Dube
Professor Fred Zindi
Tafadzwa Zimoyo
I know Prof. Fred Zindi from my dad's journalist days but I'm not so sure what contribution he has made to Zim Hip-Hop. This nomination would've made more sense at the ZIMAs. I'm betting on Sindisi Dube to take this one, no offence Rizla.
Best Media (on line)
The Lounge –Kronic
Mcpotar
African Hip Hop Blog
Not sure what "The Lounge" is and I'm wondering if this is the same person also nominated for Producer of the Year. My absence on this list, even though I submitted my application has people feeling some people feeling some type of way. Not even sure what criteria was used here. I have 65,000 page views in the year that I started this blog, not to mention my Whatsapp Broadcasts which have been spreading Zim Hip-Hop far and wide. They say numbers don't don't lie so check this and this out too.
Even though I'm not nominated I'd rather keep it in the family so Potar should take iyt.
Best Underground
Dimitri and The Scarecrow
Outspoken
Doc Freezy
AWA
Alkanemo
I say AWA but Outspoken could also grab this one.
Best Dance Crew
MnM
Real Flex
Explosion
Lethal Fam
Super Geeks
Not familiar with any of the names so I'll leave this one open.
Best Freestyle Award
Noble Stylez
T Gonz
Alkanemo
Ishy X
Doc Freezy
There's been beef brewing between Ishy X and TGonz so whoever wins this one between the two the other will not be made to forget it. Doc Freezy seems to be the relatively unknown person in this category but then again you never know...
Peoples Choice Award
Whatsapp Voting line +26377 8 243 243,Deadline 8 December
Tehn Diamond
Mudiwa Hood
Schingy
P.O.Y
Cal_Vin
Trae Yung
Stunner
T-Gonz
Maskiri
8L
This one is a number's game, with the stand outs being Stunner, Maskiri and Tehn Diamond. I foresee one of the three taking this one home. I can already imagine B. Sun's Instagram if Tehn wins this...
Best Dressed Male and Female
Decided by the fashion police on the night.
It will be intersting to see the how the winners for this are chosen.
The Zim Hip Hop Awards 2015 will be held at 1+1 Happy Longcheng Plaza, Belvedere, Harare on Thursday 10 December 2015.
